I was reading Better Homes and Gardens this month and loved that one mom and her child took a huge canvas and painted it together and used it as art for above their mantle. It looked fabulous… and it really looked like a professional piece of modern art to me. I’ve blogged a few times about not being totally sure what to do with our bowling alley style living room (long and skinny). We haven’t replaced the drywall yet so we still have the off white (old) grass cloth wallpaper and the bead board behind the mantle is also off white. So…. sort of blah.
We don’t have a printer so I emailed AJ a coupon for Michael’s yesterday, had him print it out and told him he’d be surprised when he came home. Drew and I headed off into the rain to Michael’s, got a 30 x 40 canvas which was big enough to cover the TV and TV stand on the mantle and then I picked out some paints I knew would coordinate with our rug. Excuse the awful pictures in this post…
Here is the artist in action… I have pretty lousy pictures of him painting because just imagine how difficult it is to:
a. get photos
b. keep your son from eating the paint
c. keep the paint off your hardwood floors
d. do all of this at the exact same moment…
As you can see above we weren’t a 100% successful at keeping it off the appliances. 🙂 After we finished painting I wasn’t so sure about it… in fact my first thought was ‘what have I done… ‘ (I helped paint after it was clear he was so not into it anymore… could have been something to do with me holding him incredibly uncomfortably to keep him from not smashing his fist through the canvas).
