My sister’s 29th birthday was on Saturday and I was in charge of the cake. She requested a cake with raspberry filling and buttercream frosting… I was happy to oblige. And eat it. 🙂 Sometime I’ll share with you my recipe for Coconut Orange Marmalade Cake… it’s delish, and similar to this one.
But I wanted to do something fun and festive for the top of the cake. I researched some great cake toppers but didn’t have anything on hand to make some of the fabulous ideas I found. I came up with a little bit of an alternative cake topper that anyone can do:
First, you just fold any size paper (I used varying sized squares and rectangles) in the typical accordion style… you know those instances when you are sweltering in church or at a wedding and you need to make a fan out of your program? Well, make it the same way.
I then put two of my accordion fans on each side of a toothpick and secured them with tape.
So far so good.
But the tape didn’t look so hot so I decided to use some ribbon I had in my stash to cover the tape. It’s just some Martha Stewart ribbon that I got ages ago. Glue dots would be amazing for this project, but I didn’t have any, so I secured the ribbon with tape, again, then started wrapping and then secured it at the end with another very tiny bit of tape. That part, friends, is why I wished I could find my glue dots or glue gun… the finished product would have looked more well, finished.
The outcome is a fun, and maybe slightly vintage, looking cake!
It wasn’t the quickest craft ever… it took me about an hour but it was fun to feel like I was just doing something with my hands and making it up as I went along!
Yes, that is my hubby leading the pack. 🙂
I’m the Race Director (sounds so official, right?) for the Scot Trot 5K on this coming Saturday. It’s in Wenham, MA at Gordon College and ANYBODY is welcome to register. In fact, I’d love it if you did. I LOVE meeting blog readers. Especially blog readers who are runners. 🙂 The race is fun and easy and trussst me… you so do not need to be a great runner. We have runners from all ages and stages.
You can find more info about the race and register at Active.
Okay, on a different note, I just have to tell you about this exciting new thing I’m doing that I L.O.V.E. I’m teaching Middle School Girls Sunday School. The girls are hysterical and fun. We talk about food, decorating, clothes and school. And then of course we talk about our lesson, this week we talked about God chiseling away at us to make us more like him and that we need to remember WE are his masterpiece… even as messed up as we are. This week and last I’ve wondered if God’s had the lesson more for me than them because I’ve been reminded about so much of who God is, and how much he loves me, through it.
