My friend Heather sent me the link to this painting upholstery tutorial about a month ago. I’d pinned one a while ago but found using the textile paint in Heather’s link far cheaper than the fabric spray paint from the other tutorial I pinned.
A friend from church has this super comfy pink Hitchcock chair in the Sunday School room where I teach the middle school class. When my class redecorated the room I asked her if I could take the chair and do a little makeover to it; she was completely fine with the chair getting a little revamp.
I’m not going to go into all the steps in detail because you can find them here, but here we go, these photos were after two coats of latex paint mixed with textile paint and water.
It didn’t go on completely evenly, which was fine, but it covered the chair enough that you weren’t really sure the chair was pink before. Phew. I then took my electric sander to the chair to take away some of the grittiness. It still felt sort of rough, definitely not like fabric… AJ described it as feeling like leather. I think it felt like plastic. After sanding the chair I mixed more textile paint with acrylic paint (I custom mixed the color for the shade of navy that I wanted for Drew’s room using a royal blue and a little bit of black). The acrylic paint did a great job of covering the chair. It still doesn’t feel like fabric and I would love to have it professionally reupholstered at some point but since money doesn’t grow on trees it won’t be happening right away.
You can tell from the photo above that there is a little patch on the left arm of the chair… I am having trouble getting it to stay down and I couldn’t sew to painted fabric. Hot glue wasn’t so hot, if you catch my drift. Any suggestions?
So, my thoughts on painting fabric… I don’t really think it’s the best option if it’s a chair you want to cuddle up in. If it’s a chair more for display or to throw coats / bags on, I’d be totally game. And I may even do it for a desk chair we have… I have to see how Drew’s chair wears. It was an ultra inexpensive way to give a little makeover ($25ish) and it was a project I’d really wanted to try. And if nothing else, it looks pretty fab in Drew’s big boy room until we get it redone. 🙂
Meanwhile… here he is reading before he fell asleep for his nap today. Precious.
And then during his nap… can you tell he’s in love with his cars? 🙂
Tonight I’m off for few hours to a ladies night with some women from church and AJ and my dad are going to a Colgate (AJ’s alma mater) vs. Harvard hockey game in Boston. What are your plans for the weekend?
