It’s hard to believe that in no time Drew will be in preschool. Our application is in for a preschool in the town next to us and it’s got me brainstorming everything Drew needs to know before kindergarten. And no, I’m hardly one of those moms who are vying for their child to get into Harvard by their preschool choice. I’m aiming for Oxford, I want him to have an accent. Kidding (but not about the accent part).
In all seriousness, it’s really incredible what kids are expected to know before entering kindergarten and Drew has definitely been showing an interest is all numbers, telling time and spelling so I decided to embrace it with this $30 Thursday project.
I designed top of the old barn board to be 1-100 by tens. I plan on showing Drew a number 1-9, putting it next to one of the numbers on the board and seeing if he can figure out what it is… like 40 + 6 = 46…
My sister taught first grade for years and told me kids need to know Dolch sight words before kindergarten so I’m working through that list of words. We practice words all the time with his foam tub letters so I figure we’ll leave these words up here and work on them in the tub too. He’s always asking how to spell things!
He’s obsessed with his Mickey calendar, which is right next to this board, but I want him to be able to focus on what day of the month it is (the 1st)… and I need to add in a card that says which day of the week (Thursday) it is as well.
Just for kicks I’ll show you the other views of the room… soon you’ll be seeing it with new windows, drywall and hardwood floors! Eeek! We just got a call tonight that the windows have arrived!
Here are some other plans for the room:
