I’ve got just about the easiest fall arrangement for you today. And it’s free. I’m not sure if there could be a better combo. Every time I drive by swampy or marshy areas I always stare at the amazing cattails and common reeds. I love their texture and how full they are. I started thinking that I needed something for our house till Thanksgiving to give it a fall vibe that wouldn’t die and I came up with an arrangement made almost entirely from these reeds. This arrangement got a little added boost from a turkey feather I picked up at The Vintage Bazaar last weekend. If you are local to Massachusetts North Shore I couldn’t recommend this any more… it was fantastic. This feather was $1 and I got some great Christmas ornaments for pennies!
It’s incredibly simple to create the arrangement. Here’s what you need:
1. A pot with either wet dirt or florists foam at the bottom.
2. A huge bunch of the common reeds (the kind that have become bushy like the ones above).
3. A turkey feather.
It’s incredibly easy to make the arrangement. The key to making the arrangement look full is to make sure you have enough of the common reeds otherwise you’ll have huge bare spots. Start arranging around the edges of your pot. Cut your reeds so that you can only see the bushy part over the side of the pot (NO stem). As you layer the stems into the pot criss-cross them diagonally over each other while sticking them into either the wet dirt or florists foam. As you get closer to the middle of the arrangement the height of your reeds should get gradually taller. The shorter you make your arrangement the less stems you’ll need.
I loved the ones I put on the coffee table and the buffet so much I placed one in the metal basket by the front door where I currently have my LL Bean wellies.
These three little spots add a great little bit of fall texture and coloring to our house and I expect will last till Thanksgiving. And it doesn’t matter if it’ll last a moment more because Thanksgiving night I’m starting to decorate for Christmas. I’m so excited. 🙂 What easy and inexpensive ways have you decided to decorate for fall?
If you’ve been wondering why I’ve been posting less it’s because for a couple of months our computer has been having virus after virus and the minute after we get the computer back from a professional who did a virus sweep we seem to have a virus right back on the computer and many times I can’t even get onto the blog to write a post. It may be time for a new computer… just wanted to give you a heads up if I don’t post as much as I normally do while we figure out what do to!
