Remember how I posted a while ago about the cottage my parents were renovating in Maine? AJ, the kids and I drove up on Saturday morning to get a good look at the progress and I want to share with you how it’s looking now… it’s always nice to see the before and in progress pictures together to give you a feel for what’s really happened so here we go. 🙂
The outside of the house has had considerable work. The entire addition you see on the right side of the house was ripped off and replaced because it was all rotted. Notice a completely different roof line on the new addition. The addition no longer has a door into it anymore, the door was shifted to now be immediately to the left of the start of the addition which will bring you into the open floor plan kitchen and dining room.
You can see shift of the door placement from the inside in these photos. Instead of a tiny window and a door there is a double window that will be above the kitchen sink.
My parents completely changed the layout of the cottage to make it work better and be more friendly for guests or renters. The walls in the kitchen came down to provide a lot more light and create a feeling of the cottage having more spaciousness.
The kitchen is going to be down in creamy whites with a gorgeous dark aqua island. The pre-finished wood floor was laid the other day so we got a picture of what all the floors in the house will look like. The first jut in will be for the fridge and the second one will be for a stackable washer and dryer.
The large bedroom was tweaked when the bathroom was taken out and a jut out that made the room incredibly skinny was reduced in size. The left closet was bumped out into the room so coat hangers could be hung on the bar (previously it was too skinny for that). This photo is taken from nearly the same angle so you can see the different in the bump out on the left side of the photo.
The small bedroom has been reworked to be the master bedroom after moving the primary bathroom and using that space to extend the bedroom.
My parents nixed a basement / crawl space with stair access and opted to more wisely use that space to add a second bathroom in the master bedroom. The crawl is now just accessible through the outside. The heating unit will be in that skinny closet in the master bathroom.
That’s all for now… I’m shooting for a floor plan in one of the next posts on the cottage reno so you can really get a feel for what shifted. Doesn’t it look incredible already with all the natural light?
