Here we go on part one of our living room makeover! I ordered the rug we picked out from Rugs USA on Tuesday and it arrived yesterday night so here I am at 4:40am on Thursday typing away at my post while brainstorming how I’m going to retake half the photos of the room with the new rug in it once the kids wake up and it’s light enough outside. A blog reader mentioned in the reader survey that she wanted to see our space in progress, before it’s a finish product. Your wish is my command… here is our completely unfinished pink room with my design ideas thrown in for how we are going to transform the space into something that is more us! Let me take you for a tour of the room starting from the play area in the addition at the back of the house (remember the long room that the kitchen juts out into that we weren’t quite sure what to do with?).
When you come in through that door you’ll see that I popped a little desk that was my mom’s growing up behind the couch until I can figure out a longer console table for lamps. For right now this desk has been working hard as our larger desk is still in the garage waiting for us to work up the courage and arm muscles to bring it inside to the office (the former dining room). As you can see I’ve worked every hard on the shelves in this room by haphazardly throwing books and piles of frames places.
I just wanted things out of boxes so I unpacked everything without giving too much thought to where I was placing them; I knew I would be repainting the insides of the bookcases soon and pulling everything off anyway. When we were repainting the living room in our last home we narrowed down our two choices to Benjamin Moore Newburyport Blue and Hale Navy. We loved them both but decided Hale Navy was too dark for the space but I think that it would look fabulous with the new rug and in small doses like the back of the book shelves paired with a crisp white.
I adore the window seats, but as you know, the pink paisley isn’t my style, so I plan on stripping the wallpaper and recovering the seats and pillows. I’m going to paint the built-ins and their backs first and then see how I want to proceed with the fabric choice for the window seat. I don’t want to rush into something and realize it isn’t what I want. That’s pretty much my mentality for this entire house… if I don’t have a clear vision of how to proceed I don’t want to do a quick fix.
Drum roll please… our new rug!
I’ll invite you in from the dining room side so you can see what the room looks like from a different angle. We opted for a dressier look for this space than the previous jute rug that was in here. I wanted to bring a little more daring drama into the room with some gorgeous shades of blue and base the makeover off the rug.
The little table between the slipper chairs was a desk the previous owners left for the kids that I snagged because we needed a place to put a lamp. I have an idea for the type of little side table for this spot, I just need to find it. 🙂
I love that the rug has a sort of worn look which makes it work better with our casual couch. It feels great on your feet even though it’s not incredibly thick. Elle said it was like a kitty. 🙂
I’m itching to paint the walls and trim… what are your votes?
I’m heading to the paint store later today to pick up some samples so we can get started on the makeover. Follow along on Instagram to check out what I’m considering!
