Let me show you the before and afters of the cottage my parents have been working on in Maine. They purchased this home a few years ago in Ocean Park, Maine. My Dad’s family had been vacationing in this ultra quaint town since the 1960s when my Nana bought a cottage two blocks from the ocean. When my parents purchased this cottage a few years ago it needed some TLC. A single elderly woman had lived in it for years and as a result there was a lot of deferred maintenance and updating.
The kids and I went up last Saturday. Their first renters arrive in two days so my parents were feverishly getting ready and still in the process of hanging artwork and curtains and putting the finishing touches on the home while we were there, and they are up there right now doing the same. Without further ado:
The kitchen was bumped out into the area that had the laundry and a stairway down to the crawl space to create one longer and more open kitchen. The door was moved to the space between the kitchen and dining room.
Recognize these stools? 🙂 (Similar HERE)

AFTER: DINING ROOM
Previously there was wallpaper and some sort of ceiling panels in here. Both are now gone, as is the wall in between the dining and kitchen areas.
Table and Chairs: Craigslist (similar table, different finish HERE)

AFTER: LIVING ROOM
My parents had this room opened up to the kitchen and dining room, refinished the floors, painted the fireplace, removed wallpaper and put in a new ceiling. Oh, and bought this Room & Board sofa for $185 (wow!).
My parents had to spend far more than they hoped on projects you can’t see from these photos (like a completely redone crawl space under the house that took a year to complete because ridiculous amounts of moisture was coming up into the house and ruining the floors). Because their budget for fun stuff, like furniture, was cut because of necessities my mom is working with the plaid chair and ottoman that they had in their home for now.
The bathroom was not only gutted but completely relocated so that it is behind the kitchen now instead of at the end of the hall.

For the life of me I can’t find the before pictures of this bedroom but it had massive amounts of wallpaper and an awkward jut out removed.
Bed Frame: Craigslist (incredibly affordable and similar one HERE)
Bedding: Home Goods, I think (similar affordable one found HERE, including shams!)
Here is a floor plan that is totally not to scale but gives you a general idea of how the cottage is laid out!
Hope you enjoyed the fun tour! They have it fully rented this summer but if anyone wants a fun post-Labor Day getaway feel free to email me for info (email@example.com). It’s two bedroom, two baths and four blocks from the ocean.
