I knew long before we purchased this house what I wanted the space to look like. It’s always funny to see a dream in my head come together in real life… especially after having it be a dream for so long. I’ve mentioned before that the toilet was actually the trigger to the whole makeover. It kept running and AJ was itching to get it replaced to save on water. So I pitched Lowe’s to see if we could partner on replacing the toilet. I wanted the same toilet we have in the downstairs bath because I love the looks of it. They suggested one that looks fairly similar that additionally has some fun cleaning features. I was game as long as jived with the general look I was going for and was energy-efficient.
We’ve had the toilet for about a month and a half now and AJ’s already commented to me that he likes it so much better than the one I wanted to purchase. It’s flushing is quick and efficient (and quiet, which I love, especially when we are trying not to wake the kids!). It’s not a cheap toilet ($399) and as my father-in-law, Kerry, was helping AJ unpack it he commented that it was the Cadillac of toilets. Kerry and AJ said that it was incredibly well made and well thought-out (I will willingly admit I know nothing about the inner workings of a toilet so I’ll leave that judgment up to them).
I was surprised that the toilet seat, lid and the top back of the toilet were plastic. If you didn’t know it was plastic you probably wouldn’t notice but that didn’t wow me. American Standard, though, didn’t do it to be cheap, the back of the toilet needs to be able to be raised up to access the cleaning features and batteries and the toilet seat has a soft close feature (which I now LOVE because I don’t hear Drew slamming the seat).
The cleaning feature is great to have but honestly I get a better clean when I scrub with my toilet brush (and I don’t mind that 30 second chore).
MY VERDICT: The Acticlean American Standard toilet is a good toilet but I would save a little money and purchase another toilet from Lowe’s with a similar look and great reviews like this slightly cheaper one by American Standard or updated version of our half bath toilet or this significantly cheaper Kohler energy-efficient toilet. I have always had a great experience with Lowe’s and generally find they have more stylish options than Home Depot.
