A while ago I told you we were going to redo the shower in our upstairs bathroom… I showed you the gorgeous marble subway tile and you’ve seen the bathroom progress. And then we realized, if we wanted it done right, it couldn’t be a DIY job because it’s a custom sized floor and the drain would need to be moved. To do that job correctly it would be $1800 just for the tiler (AJ didn’t feel comfortable doing it with the downward sloping floor). That’s not even including the plumber to get the floor of the shower correct for the tiler or moving the drain. We scrapped that idea and came up with an idea that we think may be our best yet.
Here’s the current state of our bathroom:
You can see two changes in the bathroom in the photo below. Our thought is to bump out the wall in the bathroom into the guest bedroom (which may become the nursery when we adopt). The shower will become stackable laundry (our laundry is currently in the 1970s style finished basement which certainly gives me space to spread out but it would be easier to have it upstairs).
We are also removing the doorway that leads into the sink area. I can imagine the room will be so much brighter without that (you can see more of what I mean from the photos at the bottom of the post). The other reason this plan works out so well is because currently we only have one shower. Adding a tub means that we can continue to use the shower until the tub is in working order, then we can demo the shower to add the stackable laundry. It’s a project that can go in stages to work with our life. When we rented out the master suite (on the other side of the yellow hallway below) we lost the only tub in the house.
I always find it easier to see real life pictures with floor plans so let me show you what we plan on doing. We have talked about tackling this project this summer after AJ is out of school and has a little more time but that’s not set in stone yet.

We still have a lot to do, that’s for sure. It’s a little daunting but I’m so excited to have a tub. Life will be a lot easier with not needing to use a Rubbermaid tote for baths. Drew and Elle learned to take showers pretty quickly. 🙂 Don’t you think the addition of the tub will make such a difference?
In other news, we are starting to get emails about possible children to adopt.. we are still waiting on our approval because the state background checks are backed up. Our social worker is trying to push ours through quickly because she has a specific situation in mind for us. Once things become more finalized we’ll share details but everything is SO up in the air now. We’d appreciate your prayers as we navigate this process and try to figure out exactly what child(ren) God has for us… and for us as we try to get Drew and Elle ready to have one or two more siblings with no set date on when that’ll happen.
